3 Things A Digital Leader and Community Builder Must Learn

Hi Everyone! Hope you are having a great day. You may be reading this post because you’re curious about the things I’ve learned in teaching online freelancing and building my community. Starting is never an easy task for anyone who wants to advocate on something. In most cases, you will need to do a lot of “Labor of Love” and go through some trial and errors, which, by the way, is not a pleasant stage to go through.

However, just like any advocate, in order for you to really make an impact and be heard, you need to go through a transformation and become a person that people can relate with and follow. Allow me to share with you the 3 of the many learnings I had in becoming a “Digital Leader” and builder of an online community.

Lesson #1: Don’t let fear or uncertainty stop you.

When I decided to venture into promoting online freelancing in the Philippines, I know for a fact that there are a number of people who are already doing it. It’s not an easy thing for me to decide. For one, it is because of fear thinking that my efforts will simply go in vain. I have this dream and vision that in order for many Filipinos to recognize the opportunities of having an Online Job, it’s important that they get to hear it from someone who is doing it and not just in it for money.

There are many people or so called ‘gurus’ back then who preached about how great it is to be an online professional, but when you asked those who attended their events, most of them gave negative feedbacks. Such circumstances hit a string within me and ultimately fueled my desire to pursue my advocacy. The fear that I had back then of starting out was replaced by this ideal that people don’t have to pay for information that they can easily get online, unless it involves a much more valuable training, like mentorship. In fact, what I feared is that if I will not start teaching, many people will be at the mercy of those marketing gurus of the online jobs and virtual assistance industry.

Lesson #2: You don’t have to be a natural-born leader, you just have to be passionate enough.

Another lesson that I learned in my journey as a Digital Leader is the realization that everyone can become one, they just need to have enough passion and courage to do so. Launching this blog is not easy. It’s already too noisy in this niche and marketplace. However, despite the fact that I came late, I believe that if I have the passion to pursue this and an undying faith that this will succeed, people will take notice and my message will be heard.

True enough, with consistent blogging, sharing and interacting with the people who need my help and support, I was able to get the attention of many individuals, including people from various TV and radio station. In fact, I am currently part of a roadshow that the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – ICT office has organized to reach out to the rural areas in the country. This is to encourage and promote the online freelancing career.

Sustaining these type of activities is not a work of a natural born leader, but someone who is simply passionate enough to pursue his advocacy no matter what the cost. So… if you are really serious, I am sure you will be able to reach your goal. My suggestion is: BE PASSIONATE.

Lesson #3: To sustain it, you must build a community, a “movement”.

I believe, one important thing that will make a lasting impression to your advocacy or aspiration is by having a group of people supporting your cause. This is where you need to be part of, or build a community around your advocacy. To some people, they call such as ‘Tribe’ or ‘Movement’. This is one very important aspect of becoming a digital leader. For one, they say that if a leader doesn’t have any follower, they are not a leader. Having a community behind you is a sure sign that you are indeed one. But remember, building a community is one thing, sustaining it is another. To sustain your community, you need to be relevant, interesting and trustworthy. If you can integrate these things, your community will not only grow, but will reach and impact lives. All because you decided to ignore your fear & sustain your passion.

These 3 key things that I’ve shared with you are learnings that I got from seeking mentors and I am glad to have found one who knows exactly how to go about it. She is Ms. Janette Toral. She currently have a FREE training program called “Digital Leaders Bootcamp” and you can access the training modules HERE

But the best way to really learn from someone is to be with them and personally ask questions. They will be having a limited-seat-only event this coming Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 1pm to 5pm at the “Best Western Plus Antel Hotel” in Makati Avenue, Makati City. If you’re interested to join this event, click HERE for more information. If you have questions or concerns about the event or the training program, you can send them a message through their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/digital.leaders.boot.camp

So there you have it, some of the things that I’ve learned in becoming a Digital leader and influencer in my field. I hope that you take advantage of the FREE and Live training event they are organizing. Remember, the best investment you can have, is the investment on yourself and your growth.
