Stick To Your Work Schedule – Online Jobs Career Success Tips Series

One of the benefits of being an Online Freelancer and working from home is the flexibility of adjusting your time and schedule to suit your needs. Unfortunately, many freelancers and online professionals take this to the extreme and simply change schedules even when they are in the middle of doing something. This has a negative impact not only on their productivity, but also on their quality of work and amount they can earn.

I remember a time when I, myself, were in the middle of doing a major project and then something important came up that I really have to drop everything and address the situation. Just imagine if i am working on a 9 to 5 job or any job that doesn’t allow this form of time and schedule flexibility, I’ll need to move mountains just to be allowed to stop & leave work. These are the times that I am very thankful that I have this online jobs career.

There are many ways that you can do to help you in being faithful in your schedule, but allow me to share with you 3 things that I do to remain productive and stick to my work schedule.

A) Establish and Set a Work Schedule & Routine:

repeatIt’s very tempting as freelancers to simply work whenever you feel like it. However, one should be aware that it is not good for one’s career. My suggestion is for you to know exactly when is the most productive time for you– when you feel so focused, less distracted and alert. This could be early in the morning where people are still sleeping, in the afternoon where everyone might be out for work and the children are sleeping, or probably during weekends where the rest of the family is at home and can take charge of the chores you are doing. Whatever situation or condition fits you, block off those period of times and “STICK TO THE SCHEDULE” :)

It’s best also to define what you will do during the time you scheduled to work. Let say during the first 15 to 30 minutes of your work schedule, you will check emails. On the succeeding hours, you will do all the items in your “to-do” list. Then, 30 minutes before your work schedule ends, do the wrap-up and send your client or clients the output/report for the day. This is just an example and your work schedule can vary. Just make sure that you have a routine in place so that your attention will be focused on doing the work instead of asking yourself, “What should I be doing?”

B) Have  a central tool for all your To-Dos and Activities:

stickAnother important aspect of making sure you are sticking on your schedule is to know what to schedule and things you will need to do during your productive times. Many of us have this tendency of writing the things we need to do on any sheet of paper we see or open a notepad on our computer and simply type things away. This may seem logical because we are taking notes of the things we need to do, but the reality is we are simply adding more to the confusion.

What you need to do is to have one central location for all your schedules and to-do list. This can be your trusted conventional organizers that people buy in bookstores or it can be its digital counterpart like, or the ever popular Google Calendar. Just choose what best fits you and set it up so that when you are “in the zone” to work and stick to your schedule, you already have them in one place.

C) Turn-off all forms of distraction on your computer:

restrictThis so far, is one of the common schedule and productivity busters around. Social media, chat/text messages, and email notification are just a few clicks away. Let’s admit it, we do this once in a while and it has slowly eaten our productive time and schedule.

To put these distractions in its right place, make sure that you are logged out of your social media accounts and chat applications. This simple but effective approach helped me so many times because I don’t see notifications of new messages. For emails, I don’t check it every 1 hour. What I usually do is check it every 2 to 3 hours instead and only reply to those emails that are not deemed urgent at the end of the day.

I know some of you might say it’s so easy to log back in. If you think this is a hindrance, then you can try to go to the extreme and seek help from someone you trust to change password and only allow you to login during the schedule you have set. But I do hope you don’t go to this extreme :) Of course, you don’t need to fully deprive yourself of these, only during your work schedule, unless access to these are required for your work.

So there you have it, those are the 3 tips that can help you stick to your schedule for you to continue being productive when doing online freelance jobs.
